Badminton

Badminton is certainly one of the principal sports events in 2008 Olympics Games that is going to be held in Beijing in China. Medals are given in 5 sets for five kinds of different events of badminton. The badminton events include singles badminton competition for men, Singles badminton competition for women, doubles badminton competition for men, doubles badminton competition for women and mixed doubles badminton competition.

The National Olympic Committee can allow a maximum of three players or three pairs of players in each of the events. Each of the players or the pairs of the players has got to be qualified. For the singles events, a maximum number of 64 players can qualify, while in the field of doubles events, a maximum number of 16 pairs can be qualified. For doubles and the mixed doubles events the conditions of making entry into the tournament, is almost the same.

The ranking list provided by the IBF on 1st May in the year of 2008 will be regarded as the principal qualifying criteria. It is the IBF that will offer the list of 38 singles badminton players and 16 pairs of badminton athletes each for the doubles badminton events and the mixed doubles badminton events.

Each of the continents in the world has been assured that there would be at least one entry from each continent in each of the badminton events in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing in China. If the players from a continent cannot make his or her or their way through the selection procedure of the National Olympic Committee, the player or the pair who are the top rankers in badminton in the respective continent, will be regarded to be qualified. This is in order to satisfy the assurance that has been given to the continents. If there is no ranking system in any of the continents, the champion of the recent most badminton championship in the continent, will be treated as qualified.

The hosting country can enter a maximum number of 2 players who need not go through the qualifying process of the NOC. But, if the country is willing to enter more than two players, the players have to satisfy the qualifying regulations. There are also two berths in each of the singles badminton events. These places will be occupied by the players who will be invited. Which players will take part in the invitational places, is to be decided by the IOC Tripartite Commission. There are also some other additional qualifying regulations. But they are not quite regular. Rather, they are much complicated.
