Canoeing |
|
|
Canoeing is the activity of paddling a small boat or a canoe with the purpose of recreation. This is also called a float trip, sport, or transportation. The term usually refers exclusively to the use of a paddle to incite a canoe with only the powers of human muscles. A small boat or a kayak is propelled using a paddle with two blades. Here the paddler sits with their legs in front of them. But canoes are propelled using single- or double-bladed paddles where the paddler used to kneel or sit. But there is a difference between Kayaks and canoes.

Kayaks are closed-decked boats with a spraydeck, while canoes are usually open boats. But there are also exceptions where you can find open kayaks and closed canoes. Technically, a kayak is described as a special kind of canoe. Canoeing is regarded as a type of extreme sports. It is difficult to determine when exactly a canoe can be regarded as a kayak, and is also often arbitrary. Internationally, the term canoeing is used as a generic term for both forms though the terms “paddle sports” or “canoe” or “kayak” are also used. In North America, however, “canoeing” exclusively refers only to canoes, as different from both canoes and kayaks. At times, paddling a kayak is also referred to as kayaking. In modern canoe sport, both canoes and kayaks may be closed-decked. Other than a few competition specifications and seating arrangement it is difficult to differentiate most competition canoes from the equivalent competition in kayaks.
The most prominent difference is that competition kayaks are always seated and paddled with a double-bladed paddle whereas competition canoes are generally kneeled and paddled with a single-bladed paddle. But here is also some exceptions, like Canoe Marathon. The International Canoe Federation or ICF world wide is the sole canoeing organisation that creates the standard rules for the different disciplines of canoe and kayak competition. The ICF recognises several competitive and non-competitive disciplines of canoeing, of which Sprint and Slalom are the only two forms competing in the Olympic games.
The United States Canoe Association is widely considered the American authority in sport and recreational canoeing. This organization also recognizes many ICF classes. Other national competition rules are usually based on the rules of the ICF. The different styles of canoeing as classified by ICF are: Dragon Boat Racing, Playboating, Outrigger Canoe Racing, Extreme Racing and Surf skiing. Other recreational aspects of canoeing are not strictly defined. The distinction between artificical and real-life canoeing is growing increasingly blurred as new hybrid kayaks, canoes and similar craft are developed. Some of the other popular and famous forms of canoeing are: wave skiing, surf skiing and white water rafting. Open canoes may be sailed, poled or punted, tracked and lined or even gunnel-bobbed.
