Field hockey is popularly known as hockey and are played by people of all ages. This game is popular in many countries and the game is played at national levels. There are many types of hockey like field hockey and ice hockey played at many countries. In order to distinguish it from the other, it is referred as field hockey. Many tournaments are played at national and international levels. These tournaments are participated by both men and women. In the 1980s, there were hockey teams from India and Pakistan who were winners of almost all the tournaments.

Now the field hockey teams are from countries like Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, England, Korea and New Zealand. The women hockey teams are from countries like Netherlands, China, Australia, India, Germany, Argentina, Korea.
The governing body of the sport field hockey is the International Hockey Federation. This organization decides on the rules and regulation of the sport. All the World Cup Tournaments are organized by this governing body. There are competitions and tournaments at the national levels in the countries where field hockey are played. There are field hockey tournaments at the junior and senior levels. There are competitions at the club levels too but theses are not very popular compared to the national and international ones. In many countries field hockey is played by women only. There are places where hockey is played by both men and women together. Field hockey in most of the places are played on open areas but places where there are heavy snow, field hockey are played at indoor stadiums.
Field hockey is played with sticks that are curved in the end known as the hockey sticks and ball. The game can be played with both the hands. Field hockey has eleven players on each side or team. There are as many as five substitutes allowed on each side or team. Some of the positioning and rules are similar to soccer. There are players who are defense, midfielder and front line players in a team of field hockey. In field hockey there is a goal keeper who has specific clothing and protective gear. The goalkeepers in field hockey have to wear padded clothes, helmets with masks, kickers, guards, and leg guards. There are certain restrictions on the extent to which the goalkeeper can play. The field hockey teams are made of attackers and defenders.
There are two umpires in the matches of field hockey. The umpires decides on the penalties and other technicalities of the game. In the games, tackling is allowed. There can be no obstruction of the players intentionally as per the rules. In field hockey, there are three stages of warnings during the game. There is green, yellow and red card. A green card in the game is like a warning. The yellow card leads to the suspension of a player for a very short period of time. When the red card is shown, a player is suspended from playing the game immediately and at the same time he or she misses other matches too for a period of time.
